The History of Memorial Day

America pauses every May to honor the men and women who gave everything in service to this country.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May each year. It began after the Civil War as "Decoration Day" — a day to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. By 1971, it became a federal holiday honoring all U.S. military personnel who died in service to their nation.
A TRADITION OF HONOR

What started as communities gathering at cemeteries to decorate graves grew into a nationwide moment of remembrance. From small-town parades to the National Moment of Silence at 3:00 PM, Memorial Day calls us to stop, reflect, and be grateful for the sacrifice that keeps freedom alive.

This Memorial Day, we honor those who served — and invite you to gather with the people you love. Grab a bag of PuffYUMS! and celebrate the freedom they fought to protect.
